The Swahili Bible, also known as Biblia Takatifu ya Kiswahili, is a Christian scripture that consists of various sacred texts of Christianity. These texts, which have been traditionally referred to as "books," are gathered in what is known as the "Bible," a term derived from the Greek word "biblos," meaning "book." It should be noted that the Swahili Bible is distinct from the Tanakh, which is the sacred scripture of Judaism and is sometimes also referred to as the "Bible," particularly in Hebrew Bible editions. The books of the Tanakh are included in the first part of the Christian Bible, known as the "Old Testament." The Christian Bible is divided into two main sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament contains texts that were written before Jesus Christ, while the books of the New Testament were written after his time. Old Testament Essentially, the books of the Old Testament are the same as those found in the Hebrew Bible, although there are slight variations among different Christian denominations. During the time of the emergence of Christianity, there were disagreements within Judaism regarding which books should be considered sacred scripture. This issue was resolved around 80 AD when Jewish scholars in Jabneh (Jamnia) took a strong stance against Jesus' followers. At that time, Christians were already accustomed to a Greek translation of the sacred texts, known as the Septuagint, which had been translated in the 2nd century BC. This translation included several books that were not preserved in their original Hebrew or Aramaic languages, or were directly written in Greek. As a result, the Christian Bible included seven additional books (two books of Maccabees, Sirach, Wisdom, Tobit, Judith, and Baruch) that were later not accepted by Judaism. These seven books were rejected by Martin Luther in the 16th century and subsequently by many Protestants, but continue to be used by the Catholic Church and Orthodox Churches, commonly referred to as the Deuterocanonical books. New Testament The New Testament consists of 27 books. The first four are the Four Gospels, which provide information on the life, acts, and words of Jesus. The other books include the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles, particularly those of the Apostle Paul, and the Book of Revelation by John.
